What ꒃ means
It marks a spoken unit used to build Yi words.
This Nuosu character belongs to the standardized Liangshan system, which writes one variety of Yi. Its syllable is conventionally transcribed as “yu” in Latin letters; neighboring signs complete the word’s reading. The characters do not change shape when combined.
Traditional Yi writing had many local forms. Village priests used them for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. The earliest surviving example is an inscription on a bronze bell dated 1485. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy; it later served official documents, newspapers, and literature. It represents the Liangshan variety, not every Yi variety. The standard drew on older regional Yi signs rather than simply copying Chinese characters; traditional Yi signs are not thought to derive from Chinese characters, though modern Yi writing uses Chinese punctuation.
someone sent me ꒃ — what does it mean?
Alone, it shows a syllable, not its surrounding word.
In Yi writing, read it with the surrounding signs. If someone sends only ꒃ, it may be a character sample or a fragment of a word or sentence; ask for context to understand its role.
Ordinary in standardized Yi writing; alone, it identifies a syllable but leaves the word's reading incomplete.
