How did Yi writing develop?
The modern standard grew from regional Yi writing.
Standard Liangshan Yi script was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980. Earlier ideographs—signs for ideas—appeared in priests’ religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. Examples include 15th-century bell inscriptions and paper texts around 1500. Its origins remain debated; it is not derived from Chinese Han characters.
Neutral in Yi writing; ambiguous as a stand-alone message.
