yi syllable zzo

Yi syllable zzo

734/1165

ꋝ is a syllable sign in the standardized Liangshan writing of Nuosu Yi. In a word or sentence, the surrounding syllables complete its meaning; “zzo” is a Latin-letter reading, not an English translation. This standard grew from older regional Yi traditions, so it does not represent every local form.

What ꋝ means

ꋝ writes one syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi. “Zzo” is a Latin-letter rendering of its syllable value, not an English translation. Read it with the surrounding Yi text to understand the word or sentence.

The earliest securely dated surviving Yi inscription is on a bronze bell from 1485. That date marks the writing tradition, not a separately dated first appearance of this glyph.

Before standardization, local Yi writing was mainly used in texts handled by bimo, ritual specialists: religious, magical, medical, and genealogical works. Standard Yi shifted toward a teachable written language for Liangshan.

Why is the Liangshan standard different from older Yi writing?

It grew from older Yi writing, but does not cover every tradition. The Liangshan standard was developed in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It selected a regular syllabary from older Northern Yi repertoires for schooling, newspapers, official documents, and publishing.

Older local Yi writing remained variable: one spoken syllable could have different glyphs, orientations, or reading traditions. A reader taught the Liangshan standard may not immediately read an older or regional text; this form is for Nuosu Yi, not every Yi tradition.

How do I type ꋝ with Yi input?

Use a Yi input method (IME) that offers Yi characters. On Windows, add Yi under Language & region and switch to the Yi IME. Type the syllable’s sound input with ordinary keyboard keys, then select the matching Yi-character candidate.

Neutral in Yi writing; outside that language context, many readers will not know how to interpret it.

Alone in a general chat, it gives no clear reaction.
