What ꋜ means
It is one syllable in the standardized Liangshan Yi writing system. A syllabary gives each spoken syllable its own written character. In Yi Pinyin, zzox is a pronunciation key, not an English translation. The Yi word or phrase around it supplies the meaning.
By the Ming period, regional Yi writing forms were in use, and paper or sheepskin texts survive from around 1500. Some traditional texts are ritual scriptures read by bimo, Yi religious specialists. The standardized Liangshan form grew from those traditions; it was devised in 1974 and officially issued in 1980 to improve literacy. Other Yi writing traditions are related, though not wholly mutually intelligible. As of 2024, Liangshan Yi was used in education, newspapers, public signs, fiction, and religious writing.
How do I type ꋜ?
Enter zzox in a Yi Pinyin input method. Select ꋜ from its candidate list. Yi Pinyin is also used for teaching, lookup, and pronunciation.
A font without Yi coverage may show a missing-glyph box or fall back to another typeface. That changes the display, not the text character.
In Yi writing, it is an ordinary syllable; outside that context, its romanized spelling alone does not identify a whole word.
