What ꈕ means
It is the Yi syllable written ggix.
The ggix pronunciation is recorded as [gi³⁴]: roughly a hard g followed by the vowel in “see,” with a rising tone. It names a syllable, not an English word; read it with the surrounding Yi syllables to understand the whole word.
Where did the Yi script come from?
Yi writing has local traditions and a modern Liangshan standard.
A bronze bell carries an inscription dated 1485, commonly cited as the earliest known dated example of Yi writing. Many older manuscripts are undated, and some earlier artifacts are disputed. Older forms varied by locality; village priests used them for religious, magical, and medical texts, and records of family lineages, rather than for broad communication between communities.
The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 to support literacy in that dialect. It descends from Classical Yi, an older written tradition within Yi.
In Yi writing, ꈕ is an ordinary syllable; without Yi context, its intended word is opaque to readers who do not know Yi.
A lone ꈕ has no reliable English word-level gloss; treat it as a Yi syllable.
