arabic small high yeh

Arabic Small High Yeh

225/249

ۧ marks a yeh element omitted from the Qur’an’s consonant text: usually a lengthened “ee” vowel, sometimes the consonant y. In a mushaf (a written copy of the Qur’an), it guides recitation inside a word; it is not a separate letter. Its position depends on the edition, and it attaches to a carrier.

Text symbol

What ۧ means

It marks a yeh element omitted from the written consonant text. The Arabic letter yeh represents the y consonant and can also carry a long i vowel; ۧ supplies that missing element in Qur’anic notation. It can cue a lengthened i vowel or a consonant y. Here, rasm means the Qur’an’s written consonant spelling. The mark guides recitation within a word; it is not a separate letter or ordinary Arabic spelling.

This mark belongs to the reading aids developed around the Qur’an’s leaner consonant spelling to preserve transmitted recitation. It is part of an evolved notation tradition.

Why does ۧ render differently in Quranic text?

The edition chooses its carrier and position. Madinah-style mushafs can place ۧ above a final yeh-shaped carrier and use spacing form ۦ elsewhere. Indo-Pak editions place small yeh above final letters more broadly; Indonesian and Tripoli traditions also have distinct placements.

ۦ sits on the line, while ۧ is the high combining form. ࣳ is the corresponding small high waw in the same Qur’anic annotation layer.

How do I type ۧ without breaking the reading?

Use the edition’s order and attach it to a carrier. ۧ is nonspacing, so it takes no width of its own and needs a base character or tatweel (the Arabic extender) in a word. Arabic font support varies; Kitab’s font documentation lists Qur’anic support as of 2026.

Normal Arabic mark ordering can put a shadda (the mark that doubles a consonant) above ۧ. If an edition requires ۧ above the shadda, encode shadda, combining grapheme joiner (CGJ, U034F), then ۧ.

This is a specialist Qur’anic reading mark.

Do not add it to ordinary Arabic prose; it marks a Qur’anic recitation cue.
