Arabic Dot-Above Symbol

99/631

﮲ is a standalone Arabic-script teaching symbol for one dot above; by itself it names neither a letter nor a sound. The dotting practice it refers to helped distinguish Arabic consonants with similar shapes, but which letter a dot identifies depends on its position and writing tradition. In running text, ﮲ stays separate instead of attaching to a letter.

What ﮲ means

It labels one dot-above pattern; it does not spell a sound.

The standalone sign is used in lessons about Arabic-script dot patterns, including Urdu reading. Read lone ﮲ as “show one dot above,” not as a letter name or a universal vowel.

Where did Arabic dotting come from?

Arabic script inherited dotting conventions from earlier writing.

Arabic script developed from Nabataean writing. Distinguishing dots were in use by the first half of the seventh century at the latest. Early scribes used dots or short strokes to tell apart consonants with similar basic shapes; placement could reflect articulation.

Arabic letter dots are called nuqta; iʿjām means adding dots to distinguish letters. That older practice is the model for this teaching symbol. Scholars compare its placement logic with Syriac and Hebrew systems, though a direct historical connection is debated. One dot above can mark the letter fāʾ in many Eastern conventions or qāf in Maghrebi forms.

Why doesn't it sit above an Arabic letter?

Because it is a spacing symbol, not a combining mark.

After a letter, ﮲ occupies its own position; text layout will not move it above the letter or connect it through Arabic shaping.

Fonts can draw the standalone dot at different heights or sizes without changing its role. If you mean a letter's own dot or vowel mark, use that letter's spelling or attached mark.

Instructional and technical; it signals discussion of Arabic-script dot patterns.

A lone dot above does not identify a fixed letter or sound.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ﮲ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
