bamum letter seux

Bamum letter Seux

26/88

ꚹ is the Bamum syllable romanized as “seux”; alone, it has no fixed chat meaning. You meet it in Bamum words, charts, and lessons, where signs represent spoken syllables. Bamum writing began in Foumban around 1896 as signs used to remember words and ideas, then changed into the modern A-ka-u-ku syllabary.

What ꚹ means

ꚹ is a Bamum syllable with no fixed meaning by itself. The spelling “seux” is the chart’s Latin-letter guide to its value, not an English word or an emotion. Inside a Bamum word, ꚹ contributes one syllabic unit.

King Ibrahim Njoya and his scribes developed Bamum writing in Foumban around 1896. A 2006 Unicode encoding report places Phase A evidence in 1896–1899 and says no significant works from that first phase are believed to have survived as of 2006. It records early spellings that may already have used signs for their syllabic values.

The Unicode Standard (2025) describes Njoya’s initial idea as around 500 signs for objects and actions, used as memory aids rather than to write speech. The system was simplified through six stages: signs were reduced or reused for their sounds, leading to the A-ka-u-ku syllabary, where characters represent spoken syllables. ꚹ belongs to its modern Phase G form.

German and French colonial authorities later closed schools and tried to suppress the script. As of 2026, it is taught as Bamum heritage and preserved through a script-and-archives project based at the royal palace in Foumban.

How do I type ꚹ?

Use a Bamum keyboard for longer text. The Learn Bamum chart labels ꚹ “seux” in its Unicode-oriented spelling and “se” in the Woodard keyboard system. They are different input labels for the same letter.

The Woodard layout is documented for Windows. When using a Bamum input method, use the label that matches its layout; “seux” and “se” are not two different characters.

Why does ꚹ show as a box?

A box usually means no usable Bamum font is active. The app may lack a font with this character or may not be using one, so it substitutes a box or fallback glyph.

A 2023 Unicode update listed Noto Sans Bamum and Windows 11 support for both Bamum character ranges, while noting uneven diacritic rendering. That issue mainly concerns marks combined with letters, rather than ꚹ on its own.

Neutral in Bamum text: it identifies a syllable and carries no built-in mood.

Sent alone, it has no fixed reaction; the conversation must supply one.

Why does ꚹ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Bamum block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
