What ৭ means
It developed within Bengal’s older numeral tradition.
Related Brahmi numerals, from an early Indian writing system, appear in inscriptions around the middle of the third century BCE. In Bengal, numeral figures first appear on copper plates from the Gupta period, durable records used to write dates. Eighth-century Pala inscriptions record rulers’ reign years; eleventh- and twelfth-century Sena plates and manuscripts show forms close to modern Bangla numerals.
These figures served practical record-keeping: dates, reign years, and other quantities. A 2021 Unicode proposal notes that Bengali numerals were also used online with Syloti Nagri, a separate script with its own digit forms.
How do I type ৭?
On Windows, use Bangla INSCRIPT and its 7 key.
On Windows, add Bengali input and switch layouts with Windows+Space. Bangla INSCRIPT puts ৭ at the number row’s 7 position; Bangla Phonetic turns Latin transliteration into Bengali word suggestions.
Why does ৭ look different in another font?
Fonts and handwriting draw the same digit differently.
Bengali numeral forms vary across fonts and handwriting, so this seven can be hard to recognize. Read the surrounding script and the whole number before replacing it with another digit.
Neutral and practical; ৭ keeps the number in a Bangla-script context.
When a record calls for Bangla digits, don’t replace ৭ with Latin 7.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
