Block Octant 123568

𜶣 is one patterned pixel block: six squares fill a 24 cell. Kaypro home computers used semigraphics—rows of such blocks—to draw low-resolution pictures with text.

Text symbol

What 𜶣 means

It is one tile in a text drawing, with no fixed subject alone. Kaypro home computers split each letter-sized place on screen into two columns and four rows, so software could switch the tiny blocks on or off as pixels. A 1983 Kaypro 10 user's guide explains how this made pictures and lines in text.

Neighboring tiles combine into a larger image, so one pattern shows only part of the picture. For text-mode pixel art, keep each cell aligned in a fixed-width grid; a font that gives letters different widths or a line wrap can distort the drawing. Unicode retains these semigraphic shapes so software can emulate old computer displays.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜶣 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
