Braille dot 6

33/256

⠠ marks dot 6, at the lower right of a six-dot Braille cell; its reading depends on the Braille code. In English Braille it is the capital sign before a letter, while German Braille uses the same pattern for an apostrophe. Unicode records the dot pattern, and the active Braille code supplies its reading.

Text symbol

What ⠠ means

The Braille code decides the reading. Dot 6 is the lower-right position in a six-dot cell. A Braille code is the set of rules that maps cells to print letters and other signs: English Braille uses ⠠ as its capital sign before a letter, while German Braille assigns the same pattern as an apostrophe. Specialist codes may give it other values. The Unicode character records the dot pattern; the active code supplies its reading.

How did Braille develop from Barbier’s system?

Braille reshaped earlier raised-dot writing into a fingertip-sized cell. In 1815, Charles Barbier published a twelve-dot writing system for people unable to read print, including blind and partially sighted readers. Later accounts cast it as covert military “night writing”; a 2022 archival reassessment found that story did not match Barbier’s stated aim. The Paris school for blind students trialed the system in 1821, and students used it to take and reread notes.

A single fingertip could not feel all twelve dots at once. Braille reduced the cell to six positions that a finger could feel in one touch. His 1829 publication set out a system for words and music. Braille later developed into different language and specialist codes; the American English Braille code was published in 1932.

What if someone sent ⠠ alone?

A bare ⠠ shows dot 6; the code supplies its reading. Check the neighboring cells and identify the Braille code before taking it as a capital sign, an apostrophe, or another code-specific mark.

Technical Braille notation; its reading depends on the code and neighboring cells.

Check the code before treating ⠠ as a capital or punctuation mark.

Why does ⠠ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
