What ⛫ means
It marks a former castle site, especially on Japanese maps.
Japan’s Geospatial Information Authority (GSI) uses ⛫ as a castle ruins map symbol in its 2022 map guide for sites where a keep, turret, or stone walls remain. Its outline follows the planned layout of the site.
Castle images carried other meanings too. In the Carolingian period, an early medieval era, manuscripts showed Heavenly Jerusalem, a Christian image of a heavenly city, with a schematic castle. Around 1170, the medieval kingdom of Castile used a castle on royal seals—official marks stamped on documents—as its emblem instead of a seated ruler. These are older castle images, not proof that the Japanese map sign descends from one medieval drawing.
What does ⛫ mean in a message?
Read it as a place or castle reference first.
Beside a destination, itinerary, heritage-site name, or photo of stone walls, it can point to that castle or its remains. Alone, it could mean a real place or simply castle imagery; the surrounding message decides.
If the intended place matters, ask which castle they mean.
A compact map sign for castles; in chat, its place reading depends on nearby context.
Alone, it cannot tell you which castle or place the sender means.
