cherokee letter he

Cherokee letter he

15/92

In the Cherokee syllabary, Ꭾ is the syllable romanized as “he”; it does not translate as a word on its own. A Cherokee keyboard layout is used to type it, while font support determines how it appears. Its familiar cap-height form has a smaller case counterpart.

What Ꭾ means

It represents one Cherokee syllable; the full word gives its meaning.

“He” is a romanization cue, not an English word or a full translation. In Cherokee writing, Ꭾ combines with other syllable signs to form words. It belongs to the h-series: Ꭽ is ha, Ꭿ is hi, Ꮀ is ho, Ꮁ is hu, and Ꮂ is hv.

The Cherokee syllabary developed in 1815–1821 as a writing system for Cherokee. Sequoyah shaped it around the language’s syllables so Cherokee speech could be written for learning, communication, and community life. Its forms were later adapted for printing.

Where did the Cherokee syllabary first appear?

One proposed early trace is disputed; the later record is clearer.

In 2011, an archaeological study proposed that engravings at Red Bird River Shelter were an early experimental use of the syllabary. A published reply in 2020 challenged that reading, so the engravings are a disputed candidate, not a settled first appearance.

The Cherokee Phoenix began in 1828 as a newspaper in Cherokee and English, bringing the syllabary into journalism and political life. After forced removal, Cherokee communities carried the writing system west. It remains part of public and educational life in Oklahoma and North Carolina.

Why does Ꭾ look like a capital letter?

The larger form is the older standard shape.

Traditional Cherokee writing generally does not distinguish uppercase and lowercase. Older printed letters, including Ꭾ, were made at cap height. Unicode Version 8.0 added smaller case counterparts; the paired form for Ꭾ is ꭾ. The smaller shape represents the same syllable.

For Cherokee reading and language learning, Ꭾ is a syllable sign; “he” is its romanization cue.

Read “he” as a Cherokee syllable cue, not as an English word.

Why does Ꭾ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Cherokee block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is Ꭾ a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
