Cherokee Letter Se

47/92

Ꮞ marks the Cherokee syllable se: it supplies one spoken beat inside a word, not a whole word by itself. Sequoyah developed the Cherokee syllabary in the early nineteenth century so Cherokee speech could be written; it later appeared in newspapers, teaching, public signs, and digital text. Sent alone, Ꮞ tells you the syllable, not the sender’s intended word.

What Ꮞ means

It marks one spoken syllable; the word carries meaning.

The Cherokee syllabary is a writing system where each sign represents a spoken syllable. The Cherokee Nation transliterates Ꮞ as se: the s is like the English sound in “sun,” and e is an approximate vowel cue, from “met” to “plate.”

The surrounding Cherokee word supplies the translation.

How did Ꮞ enter print?

Sequoyah developed syllable signs for writing Cherokee.

He moved from word-like marks to signs for spoken syllables.

A claimed older inscription at Kentucky’s Red Bird River Shelter is not secure evidence for an earlier origin: a 2019 archaeological reanalysis rejected that reading. The documented trail runs through the system in 1821, Cherokee Nation adoption in 1825, and the bilingual newspaper Cherokee Phoenix in 1828.

Why does Ꮞ resemble a Latin letter?

Its sound belongs to Cherokee, not to a lookalike alphabet.

Print altered some handwritten forms to suit available type. Cherokee is an Iroquoian language, and Sequoyah’s syllabary was made to write it. James Evans later learned of Sequoyah’s work before creating Cree syllabics; that is influence between writing systems, not descent of this glyph.

Should I send Ꮞ alone?

Use it inside Cherokee text or a labeled lesson.

Alone, it identifies one syllable but not a whole word. Ask for context before assigning the sender a mood, joke, or identity.

Questions people ask

1

Why is there a smaller Ꮞ?

Cherokee has traditional cap-height letters and a separate lowercase set added in Unicode 8.0. The lowercase counterpart is a different character, so case conversion and fonts can make the same syllable appear at different sizes.

Why is Ꮞ a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
