Cherokee Letter Ta

53/92

Ꮤ stands for the Cherokee syllable “ta”; by itself, a syllable does not name a whole word. Sequoyah developed the syllabary in the early nineteenth century so Cherokee speakers could write their language; it soon served newspapers, laws, lessons, and religious texts. If someone sends Ꮤ alone, the surrounding Cherokee word is needed to translate it.

What Ꮤ means

It contributes one Cherokee syllable; context supplies the rest.

Cherokee writing is syllabic: signs represent spoken syllables and join to spell words. A lone Ꮤ signals the sound unit ta, but not enough to identify a whole word; the surrounding Cherokee text carries that reading.

Why was the Cherokee syllabary created?

It gave Cherokee speakers a writing system built for their language.

Sequoyah developed the script in the early nineteenth century. He first tried a separate sign for every word, then shifted to representing Cherokee speech one syllable at a time. Archaeologists interpret marks at the Red Bird River Shelter, a rock shelter, as experiments in making the script—a new creation rather than an ancient writing system preserved unchanged.

The Cherokee Nation adopted it in 1825. In 1828, the bilingual newspaper Cherokee Phoenix began printing Cherokee beside English, using forms reshaped for printing type. A separate 1828 Manitou Cave inscription records a ceremony in Cherokee writing. Sequoyah’s work later helped inspire James Evans to develop a syllabic writing system for Cree in the 1840s.

Can Ꮤ look different when typed?

Yes—font coverage and Cherokee casing can change its shape.

Unicode pairs Ꮤ with the smaller Cherokee letter ꮤ. Cherokee text often remains caseless, and older type designs kept syllable signs at capital-letter height, so the form you see can depend on the font.

If Ꮤ appears as a square or question mark, your font or app cannot draw this character. Use a font with Cherokee support; do not substitute a Latin-looking character.
