Cherokee Letter Da

52/92

Ꮣ is the Cherokee syllable da, a written sound unit used within Cherokee words. Use a Cherokee keyboard layout or input method to type it; the Latin D key is not a universal shortcut. Its resemblance to D comes from the history of printed Cherokee type, and its visible shape depends on the font.

What Ꮣ means

Use a Cherokee keyboard layout or input method. Mappings vary, so the Latin D key is not a universal shortcut. For the paired small form, use ꮣ; use Ꮣ when the text calls for the standard form. If it appears as a box, the device may lack a Cherokee-capable font.

What does Ꮣ mean?

It writes the Cherokee syllable da. The name da is a Latin-letter transliteration, not a standalone /d/ sound. In Cherokee writing, the syllable contributes to a word; one Ꮣ alone does not give a reliable translation.

Sequoyah developed the syllabary to put Cherokee speech into writing. He moved from trying signs for whole words to signs for recurring syllables. Marks at Red Bird River Shelter tentatively dated to 1818 have been proposed as experimental evidence; contemporary accounts place a working syllabary in 1820–1821.

Why does Ꮣ look like D?

The resemblance comes from print design, not a shared sound.

Sequoyah’s handwritten signs were adapted for printing with Cherokee collaborators and Samuel Worcester. Some printed forms resemble Latin letters, though their Cherokee readings differ. Cherokee writing carried letters, news, laws, prayers, and history across Cherokee communities. Its success later influenced James Evans’s syllabic work for Cree and Ojibwe; that is a historical influence, not a shared set of glyph meanings. As of 2025, Cherokee Nation materials included charts, flashcards, tests, and reading resources for learning the syllabary.

A Cherokee syllable used in Cherokee writing, not a general chat reaction.

A lone Ꮣ is not an English D or a mood marker.
