城 is a legacy form of 城, the Han character for a defensive wall or walled town. It preserves a historical glyph distinction, not a separate everyday word. Unicode normalization can turn it into 城.

Text symbol

What 城 means

It is a form of 城, the character for a walled town. Chinese 城 can mean a wall or town; Japanese 城 usually means a castle. In bronze inscriptions, 城 combined 郭 (enclosure) with 成; later forms replaced 郭 with 土 (earth), while 成 supplied the sound.

Unicode kept it for round-trip conversion with Taiwan's CNS 11643-1992 character set, so converting text back can restore the source character. All four normalization forms turn it into 城. The sequence 城 UFE00 adds an invisible selector to request this glyph.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 城 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
