What 型 means
It is a compatibility code for 型. Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992 national Chinese character encoding kept a separate position for it so older text could convert to Unicode and back.
Around 100 CE, the Eastern Han dictionary Shuowen Jiezi defines 型 as a mold for casting. Its meaning broadened to “pattern” and “type”; in Japanese, 型 also names prescribed movement patterns in martial arts and Noh, a classical theater form. Traditional analysis links 土 (“earth”) to meaning and 刑 to sound.
Technical code form, not everyday spelling.

Questions people ask
1Can 型 stay distinct after normalization?
No. Normalization turns it into 型. The sequence 型︀ (型 Variation Selector-1, UFE00) keeps the standardized variant; the font must support it.
