What 婦 means
It preserves a source encoding distinction.
This character’s Taiwan CNS 11643-1992 source is plane 6 entry T6-3E50. The separate code lets that source round-trip through Unicode; it marks no different word.
婦 is much older than 婦: Shang oracle-bone inscriptions (writing carved on bones and shells) show an early form written with 帚 (“broom”); later forms add 女 (“woman”). Early records use it for wives or daughters-in-law, later more broadly for women. A traditional dictionary explanation links the broom to women’s household work; that is an old graph explanation, not a separate meaning for 婦.
Use 婦 in ordinary writing; reserve 婦 for records where the source encoding matters.
Unicode normalization changes 婦 to 婦.

Questions people ask
1Why does 婦 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
