Compatibility Form of 巢

巢 is a compatibility form mapped to 巢, the Han character for a bird’s nest. Its separate CNS 11643 code preserves a character-set entry through conversion to Unicode and back. Unicode normalization folds it to 巢, keeping the reading but losing the encoded distinction.

What 巢 means

It preserves a source code, not a separate meaning.

Taiwan expanded the CNS 11643 character standard in 1992 to include rare characters and variants. Unicode keeps entries from selected parts of it so text can be converted into Unicode and back without losing its source code. The mapped character 巢 is much older: oracle-bone inscriptions—writing carved on animal bones or turtle shells—show a nest in a tree, first as part of another character. Later Chinese texts also use 巢 as a verb, “to nest,” and for an animal’s or enemy’s lair.

A technical interchange form, not an everyday spelling.
