What 憎 means
Read it as 憎: “hate” or “dislike.”
Shuowen Jiezi (100–121 CE), an early Chinese character dictionary, defines 憎 as “to hate.” It describes 心 (“heart/mind”) as the meaning part and 曾 as the sound part.
Why is 憎 separate from 憎?
It preserves a Taiwan source entry. CNS 11643-1992, Taiwan’s character-encoding standard, assigns it T4-4351 for round-trip conversion.
Text normalization maps 憎 to 憎. Unicode also defines 憎 UFE02 as a variation sequence for the precise glyph; fonts need support to show it.
For legacy encoding, not ordinary prose.
Normalization can fold it into 憎.

Questions people ask
1Why does 憎 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
