What 抱 means
It is a historical written form of the same Chinese character.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Education lists this exact form among the variants of 抱 and traces it to the Zhengzitong, a 17th-century Chinese character dictionary. That entry treats its slightly different strokes as the same character. The underlying 抱 has a longer history: Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese character dictionary compiled around 100 CE, records 捊 with the sense “draw or gather”; later, 抱 became the written form for holding or embracing.
Unicode preserves 抱 because Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992 standard assigns this glyph a separate entry in Plane 6. Keeping a separate Unicode entry lets text convert to and from that standard without losing the selected form.
Why does 抱 become 抱 during normalization?
Normalization can merge it with 抱. Unicode normalization—a standard process that makes equivalent text consistent—can turn 抱 into 抱 because the two are canonically equivalent. The standard also defines 抱 followed by UFE00, an invisible variation selector, to request this glyph form when the software and font support the sequence.
A preservation form for a specific written variant, not a separate Chinese word.

Questions people ask
1Why does 抱 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
