What 杞 means

It represents the same Han character as 杞. On oracle bones from China’s Shang dynasty—animal bones and turtle shells used for divination—杞 appears as a place name; bronze inscriptions use it for a state. Its plant sense is wolfberry: 木 (“tree”) marks the plant category, while 己 cues the sound. The idiom 杞人憂天 (“a person from Qi fears the sky will fall”) means needless worry. Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992 character set assigned this form source position T4-2447 for round-trip conversion.

Questions people ask

1

Will Unicode normalization preserve 杞?

No. Unicode normalization maps 杞 to 杞. The standardized sequence 杞︀ preserves the distinction through normalization, but the font must support its variant glyph.
