What 淹 means
It means “soak,” “submerge,” or “stay for a long time.”
In the early Chinese dictionary Shuowen Jiezi (compiled around 100 CE), 淹 names a river and is written with the water element plus 奄 for its sound. Japanese kanji dictionaries also list 淹 for soaking and remaining.
Why does 淹 have a separate code?
It preserves a separate position in Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992 standard.
Unicode maps 淹 to 淹 and gives a standardized form: 淹 plus variation selector 1 , an invisible mark requesting a particular glyph. The bare character can normalize to 淹, erasing its separate identity; the selector sequence survives normalization.

Questions people ask
1Why does 淹 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
