What 王 means
To preserve a Taiwan CNS 11643 entry when text is converted.
CNS 11643 is Taiwan’s character set; this form is its T6-2226 entry in CNS 11643-1992. Unicode kept it separate so text converted out of that standard and back can retain its original entry.
Why does 王 become 王?
Unicode normalization replaces it with 王.
Normalization is a software step that rewrites equivalent text in a standard form; here it can erase the distinction between this codepoint and 王 when a string is processed. Unicode also defines 王 followed by variation selector FE00 (U738B FE00) for requesting this particular form. The selector is an invisible character that tells a supporting font which glyph variant to show.
Why might 王 show as an empty box?
The installed font may not contain this rare glyph.
A 2024 entry in Taiwan’s CNS character database says default fonts in Windows 7–11 lack this glyph and lists a CNS font package that supplies it.

Questions people ask
1Why does 王 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
