What did 甤 mean before computers?
It describes plant fruit hanging down. The Shuowen Jiezi, a Han-dynasty dictionary compiled around 100 CE, records this meaning for 甤. The related form 蕤 describes drooping flowers; in classical Chinese, 蕤宾 also names one of twelve musical pitch standards associated with the fifth lunar month.
甤 preserves T3-3D3F, the plane 3 entry for 甤 in Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992 (Chinese Standard Interchange Code), a multi-plane character set. This lets text move to Unicode and back to CNS without losing its original source character. Unicode added this compatibility form in 2001 for that conversion.
In ordinary Unicode text, use 甤: normalization maps 甤 to it. As of 2026-10-04, a default Windows installation lacks a glyph for 甤.
A technical preservation character for exact text conversion.
Unicode normalization changes 甤 to 甤; preserve the original before normalizing.

Questions people ask
1Why does 甤 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
