What 糣 means
It is a recorded variant of 糝, pronounced sǎn in Mandarin.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Education variant dictionary lists this glyph under 糝. It cites Shuowen Jiezi, an early character dictionary, for “rice mixed into soup” and “grain”; later references include Guangyun and Leipian. It connects 糝 with the older form 糂.
Why does it change to 糣?
Normalization maps it to 糣.
Unicode preserves the separate form for round-trip conversion with Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992 character set. Normalization can fold it to 糣; the standardized sequence 糣︀ preserves its glyph distinction through normalization in supporting software.

Questions people ask
1Why does 糣 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
