What 螆 means
It preserves a source distinction from CNS 11643. Taiwan expanded CNS 11643, its Chinese text-exchange standard, in 1992. Unicode’s chart links 螆 to source TF-517D and to 螆, letting that entry convert into Unicode and back without losing its source identity.
Normalization (treating equivalent text as one form) can fold 螆 into 螆. Unicode lists 螆 followed by UFE00, an invisible variation selector that requests this glyph.
The base character’s meaning history is older: the 1008 Guangyun rhyme dictionary and the 1716 Kangxi Dictionary both link 螆 to 蛓, a caterpillar with stinging hairs.
Use 螆 for ordinary writing; keep 螆 only when preserving a CNS record.

Questions people ask
1Why does 螆 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
