軔 Compatibility Form

479/542

軔 represents 軔, the Chinese character for a wheel chock. 發軔 (“set out”) means removing it and, figuratively, “beginning.” Its separate code preserves Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992 mapping.

Text symbol

What 軔 means

A cart chock; by extension, “stop.”

The Han-era poem Changyang fu records 軔 as a chock; Zhan Guo Ce and Hou Hanshu, two classical works, use it for “stop.” 軔 also named a length of eight 尺 (chǐ), an old Chinese measure. In the poem Li Sao, 發軔 means removing the chock to set out, later figuratively “begin.”

Why keep 軔 separate?

It preserves one source code for conversion.

CNS 11643-1992 is Taiwan’s standard for exchanging Chinese text. 軔 is entry T4-302C, plane 4, cell 30-2C; keeping it lets conversion back restore that entry.

Questions people ask

1

Why can 軔 turn into 軔?

Unicode’s canonical normalization turns equivalent text into one form, changing 軔 to 軔. The meaning stays the same, but the code point changes; exact CNS conversion back requires the original form.
