What 鼏 means
A legacy form of 鼏, the character for a vessel cover.
Two classical Chinese books of ritual instructions, Liji (Book of Rites) and Yili, use 鼏 for coverings: one describes cloth over a wine vessel; the other, a lid lifted from a ding, a tripod cooking cauldron. The books preserve these practical uses.
Why is 鼏 a separate code?
To preserve a mapping in Taiwan’s CNS character set.
Unicode reserved this form for round trips with CNS 11643. Taiwan’s register maps source code 5-5351 to 鼏 and 2-563D to 鼏, marking them as the same glyph.
Questions people ask
1Does Unicode normalization change 鼏?
Yes. Canonical normalization maps it to 鼏, so the separate code point disappears. Unicode defines 鼏︀ (鼏 followed by an invisible variation selector) to preserve its glyph distinction through normalization.
How to type 鼏
鼏\2FA1ACodes and encoding1 code points
A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
