CJK Compatibility Ideograph F951

Text symbol

What 陋 means

It is a compatibility form of 陋, not a separate word. In Chinese, 陋 can mean ugly, narrow, crude, inferior, or shallow in learning; the surrounding word determines the sense.

The Han-era Chinese dictionary Shuowen Jiezi records an earlier small-seal form of 陋; small seal is an early formal script. The character's history predates F951's compatibility encoding.

Why does Unicode keep F951?

To preserve old Korean data through round-trip conversion. Korean standards KS C 5601 and KS X 1001 included duplicate Han-character entries when one character had more than one Korean reading. Unicode retained those entries so conversion to Unicode and back to the original standard could preserve which entry the source used. F951 is a compatibility record, not a spelling choice for new text.

F951 maps to U964B 陋. A 2002 Unicode corrigendum corrected an earlier mapping from 電 to 陋; software or records based on the old mapping may still return 電.

How do I enter the exact F951?

Use code-point input for UF951; entering 陋 gives U964B. Check the inserted code point when the exact source identity matters.

A font or app without coverage for F951 may show a box, question mark, code-point fallback, or blank space. Missing font coverage alone does not mean the data is corrupted.

Technical and archival; F951 signals a need to preserve older Korean data, not an ordinary Chinese spelling choice.

If you mean ordinary 陋, F951 may appear as a missing-glyph box to the recipient.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 陋 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
