寮 is the Korean legacy encoding form of 寮, a lodging character. Ordinary prose uses 寮; 寮 keeps source identity for round-trip conversion.

Text symbol

What 寮 means

Its meaning follows 寮, not a separate word.

Older forms of 寮 appear in oracle-bone writing on animal bones and turtle shells, and in inscriptions on bronze vessels. Early senses linked a sacred building to its officials; Japanese uses include “dormitory,” while Chinese dictionaries give “small room” or “hut.”

The 1987 Korean standard KS C 5601 lists 寮 as K0-6870, linked to KS X 1001. Unicode preserves this separate form for round-trip conversion; NFC/NFD can turn it into 寮.

Why does 寮 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
