What 離 means
It means “leave” or “separate”; Han-era dictionaries also record “oriole.”
The Yijing, an ancient Chinese divination classic, uses 離 as a fire-associated three-line symbol.
Why does 離 have a separate code from 離?
It preserves a Korean text-encoding distinction.
KS X 1001:1998, a Korean text standard, pairs 離 with the Korean reading 이, roughly “ee,” and 離 with 리, roughly “ree.” Hanja are Chinese-derived characters used in Korean. Unicode normalization can turn 離 into 離.
Technical and archival: it signals legacy Korean text interchange or exact-source preservation.
Normalization may erase its separate code point; check before relying on the exact form.

1Questions people ask
1Why does 離 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
