What 匿 means
It is a compatibility form of 匿, the character for “hide.” 匿 is a Han character used in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean writing. Its Korean reading is 익, written in Hangul (the Korean alphabet) and pronounced roughly like “ick.”
The Korean text standard KS C 5601-1987 stored some Han characters more than once to mark different Korean readings. Unicode kept those entries separate so text converted to Unicode and back to that older standard could recover which entry it came from.
Why did 匿 turn into 匿?
NFKC or NFKD can turn 匿 into 匿. These compatibility-normalization forms remove the original code-point distinction. Unicode also defines 匿 followed by variation selector UFE00 as a standardized sequence for this form; display depends on software and font support.
Use 匿 for ordinary Han-character writing; keep 匿 when a legacy file or conversion test needs the exact code point. The active CJK font draws the glyph, so stroke details can vary across fonts.
Technical and archival; it belongs in legacy-data handling, encoding tests, or source-preserving conversion.
NFKC or NFKD can replace it with 匿.

Questions people ask
1Why does 匿 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
