What 﨟 means
In Microsoft Word, type FA1F and press AltX.
JIS X 0213:2004 lists it at plane 1, row 91, cell 26. That is a character-set address, not a keyboard shortcut.
What does 﨟 mean in Japanese?
It marks monastic seniority, the year-end month, or an old rank.
Japanese dictionaries read 﨟 as 「ろう」, with a long o. It can count a Buddhist monk’s years of practice after ordination (formal entry into monastic life), or name the twelfth month of the lunar calendar. Historic compounds give it rank meanings: 上﨟 is a high-ranking court woman; 中﨟 is a middle rank.
Why doesn't 﨟 normalize to 臈?
Its block label does not guarantee a normalized substitute.
The CJK Compatibility Ideographs block holds many Han characters—the character family used across Chinese, Japanese, and Korean texts—that let older computer code tables convert to Unicode and back without losing distinctions. A Japanese proposal to revise the character standard in 2000 singled out FA1F as a special case: no existing standard Han character matched it.
As of 2026, Unicode’s Han database still lists no canonical decomposition for 﨟, so text normalization leaves it unchanged instead of turning it into 臈 or 臘.
Specialist and historical Japanese; keeping it in a source can preserve a specific spelling or encoding distinction.
For exact source text, don’t replace 﨟 with 臈, 臘, or 腊.

1Why does 﨟 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
