CJK Compatibility Ideograph FA27

296/472

There is no dependable one-word gloss for 﨧; context has to do the work. Its record runs from a pre-Qin quotation and a Japanese personal name to IBM Japan's FBD3 character-set entry. The Japanese reading tells you how to say it, not what it means.

What 﨧 means

No fixed word meaning is recorded.

A Japanese dictionary cites 﨧 in a quotation from the Zhao chapter of Strategies of the Warring States, a collection of political stories and speeches, and in the Japanese personal name 椎野﨧太郎. The quotation is attributed to the pre-Qin period, before the Qin dynasty. That period dates the quotation, not the character's invention.

The Japanese reading of 﨧 is recorded as kō (コウ, with a long o). The Mandarin Chinese pinyin reading is xiào, roughly “shyaow” with a falling tone. These are pronunciations, not translations.

Why did Unicode keep 﨧?

It preserves an older source distinction in digital text.

CJK compatibility characters let older character sets pass through Unicode and back without losing distinctions in the source. IBM Japan's Japanese Graphic Character Set lists 﨧 as FBD3. Unicode also records Japanese source JMJ-030237 and U-source UTC-00852; these are catalog identifiers for character-set mappings, not translations.

The block label can mislead: Unicode treats 﨧 as a unified ideograph with no canonical decomposition. Unicode normalization therefore leaves this exact character unchanged instead of converting it into another ideograph.

It reads as a reference-heavy Han character; without context, it gives readers no clear word.

As of 2026, fonts without this glyph may show a box or fallback character; that display is not a replacement for 﨧.
