CJK Compatibility Ideograph FA2B

300/472

飼 means “feed or raise animals”; in Japanese, it is the kyūjitai, an older written form, of 飼. It belongs in legacy text when the original character form must survive conversion; ordinary Japanese writing uses 飼. Unicode normalization can collapse 飼 to 飼, so use the standardized variation sequence 飼︀ when the glyph distinction matters.

Text symbol

What 飼 means

It means feeding or raising animals.

In Japanese, 飼 is the kyūjitai, an older written form, of 飼. Both mean feeding or raising animals. Chinese references also use 飼 and simplified 饲 for feeding or raising, and sometimes for feed or provisions.

The character history describes 食 as the original sign for the feeding sense; 司 was later added as a sound marker to form 飼. Examples appear in the ancient Chinese anthology Songs of Chu and the historical work Spring and Autumn of Wu and Yue, followed by poems by Cao Zhi and Li Bai. Korean Hanja and Vietnamese Hán-Nôm references also retain the related feeding or raising sense. Unicode includes 飼 among IBM's compatibility ideographs so older encoded text can round-trip through conversion; the code point preserves a legacy form, not a new meaning.

Why can 飼 turn into 飼?

Normalization can replace it with ordinary 飼.

飼 is canonically equivalent to 飼, so Unicode normalization can replace the compatibility code point. The standardized sequence 飼︀—飼 followed by variation selector UFE00—requests this older glyph, provided the font supports the sequence.

For preserving a legacy Japanese form; ordinary Japanese prose uses 飼.

For ordinary Japanese prose, use 飼; normalization can erase 飼's separate code point.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 飼 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
