What 層 means
It carries the same layered meaning as 層. A Chinese dictionary gives 層 the gloss “multi-storey house.” Japanese dictionaries also record things stacked one over another, building storeys, social ranks, geological strata, and the mathematical term “sheaf,” a way to organize local information across a space.
層 is a legacy compatibility character tied to Japan’s JIS X 0213 standard, where it corresponds to item 1-47-65. It preserves an encoded form used when converting older text; it does not add another word.
層 vs 層: which one should I use?
Use 層 in ordinary text. Traditional Chinese and Japanese use 層; simplified Chinese uses 层. Keep 層 when the source’s exact encoded character matters, such as in a legacy Japanese text record.
Unicode normalization can map 層 to 層. A standardized variation sequence, 層 followed by UFE00, requests an alternate Japanese glyph in supporting software; it does not recreate UFA3B.
Technical and archival: it signals a character-preservation choice, not a conversational tone.
For “layer” or “floor” in ordinary text, use 層; normalization or font fallback can erase the visible distinction.

1Why does 層 look like 層 in some fonts?
Font fallback may draw both encoded characters with the same or a similar glyph. The text still contains different characters unless a normalization step changes it.
