What 漢 means
漢 preserves a Japanese source distinction.
The earliest surviving ancestor of 漢 appears on a bronze vessel from early Western Zhou China. Its inscription names the Han River in a campaign record; the vessel was cast for ritual commemoration. By the Han dynasty, 漢 named the dynasty, Han people, and Chinese writing.
JIS X 0213, a Japanese character-set standard, keeps 漢 as source form J3-7725. Han-script fonts may draw it almost like 漢.

1Why does 漢 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
