What 褐 means
It is 褐’s compatibility form, not a separate word. The old Chinese character dictionary Shuowen Jiezi describes woven hemp footwear and coarse clothing. Later dictionaries also record dark brown. Japanese dictionaries include a sense for a person of low status, tied to coarse dress. These are senses of 褐; 褐 adds none.
The mapped character appears in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese writing, with language-specific readings and compounds. 褐 itself does not choose a language or pronunciation; context does.
Why was 褐 encoded separately?
The separate form preserves the original character choice in JIS X 0213, a Japanese character-set standard, through conversion to Unicode and back. Its source label, J3-7B6F, maps it to 褐. This encoding path explains 褐; it does not create another word.
Should I use 褐 or 褐?
Use 褐 in ordinary writing; reserve 褐 for exact source fidelity. Unicode treats it as a compatibility mapping, and its code point identifies the text character rather than a fixed outline. Fonts may draw 褐 close to 褐 or show its details differently.
NFKC and NFKD apply compatibility normalization and can turn 褐 into 褐. NFC and NFD preserve the distinction.
Technical and archival: 褐 marks a source-encoding distinction, not an ordinary stylistic choice.
Don’t use 褐 as decoration; NFKC or NFKD can erase the distinction.
