What 謁 means
Use 謁 in ordinary writing; keep 謁 for source-glyph fidelity.
謁 is a compatibility form of 謁, not a different modern word. Japan's JIS X 0213 character standard included it so text converted to that standard and back could preserve its original Japanese glyph. Unicode normalization maps 謁 to 謁.
The Shuowen Jiezi, an old Chinese dictionary, gives 謁 senses related to reporting or making a request. Japanese use also includes seeking an audience with a superior and a calling card. Fonts may make 謁 and 謁 look alike, but the encoded characters remain distinct.
Using 謁 preserves a Japanese source-glyph distinction; it does not add a separate modern meaning.
Use 謁 in ordinary Japanese text; normalization turns 謁 into 謁.

1Questions people ask
1Why does 謁 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
