What 贈 means
It means the same thing as 贈: “give” or “bestow.”
The Japanese character standard JIS X 0213, established in 2000, maps source code J3-7C3D to 贈. Unicode retains 贈 as a compatibility form so conversion to and from older Japanese encodings can preserve the source distinction. Japanese references also list it as an old-form variant of 贈.
The difference is in writing, not meaning. 贈 is also used in traditional Chinese and Korean contexts; simplified Chinese uses 赠.
Should I use 贈 or 贈?
Use 贈 for new text; retain 贈 for source fidelity.
Text normalization standardizes compatible characters. NFKC and NFKD can turn 贈 into 贈: the word remains, but the exact written character does not. For older Japanese data, a JIS X 0213-aware converter can preserve the source mapping.
This is an archival spelling choice: it preserves a Japanese source distinction, not a different tone.
Normalization can erase the exact source distinction.
