What 並 means
It is the source-specific form mapped to 並.
並 means “side by side,” “together,” or “both”; 並 records a form from a separate character set—the list of symbols a text standard can encode—not a distinct word. KPS 10721-2000 labels it KP1-341D. In 2004, a proposal requested 106 North Korean compatibility ideographs—hanja, Chinese characters used in Korean—and the set entered Unicode in 2005.
Why was 並 encoded separately?
To preserve round-trip conversion with the source repertoire.
If text from the older repertoire is converted to Unicode and later converted back, 並 preserves which source form it contained instead of silently replacing it with 並. Unicode places it in a North Korean compatibility range for this interchange purpose.
Why does 並 become 並?
Normalization can map it to 並.
Unicode normalization canonically decomposes compatibility Han ideographs to unified forms. Normalized text may therefore contain 並 even if it started as 並: the reading stays, but the source-specific code point is lost. Preserve the original code point when round-trip fidelity matters.
Technical and archival: it marks a source-specific form for legacy conversion.
Use 並 for ordinary writing; keep 並 only when exact source preservation matters.

2Why might 並 show as a box?
Sometimes. Each font supplies its own drawing; if the active font lacks 並, it may show a box or blank while the text still contains the character.
Why did 並 become 並 after saving?
Normalization can map 並 to 並. The reading stays the same, but the original source-specific code point is lost.
