CJK Compatibility Ideograph FA71

368/472

况 is a source-preserving form mapped to 况, a Chinese character meaning “condition” or “situation”; traditional Chinese writes it as 況. It also carries older senses such as “moreover.” Its link to North Korea’s KPS 10721-2000 explains why it was kept separate; ordinary prose uses 况 or 況.

Text symbol

What 况 means

It is a compatibility form of the Chinese character 况.

The Unicode mapping points to 况, the simplified-Chinese form; traditional Chinese writes the same character as 況. It can mean a condition or situation; older written uses also include “moreover” and “compare.” Context sets the sense.

A form of the character appears in oracle-bone inscriptions—divination records carved into bone or turtle shell—dated around 1250–1000 BCE. A later seal-script form appears in Shuowen, an early Chinese character dictionary; an early gloss gives “cold water.”

Why does 况 map to 况?

It preserves a source distinction for round-trip conversion.

Unicode’s compatibility range preserves characters from North Korea’s KPS 10721-2000 standard so imported text can pass through conversion and return with its source form intact. A 2004 proposal submitted 106 such compatibility ideographs.

How do I keep 况 from changing?

Keep the original code point when source fidelity matters.

For ordinary prose, use 况 or 況; to preserve 况 in data, use its exact character or a Unicode-aware input method. NFKC compatibility normalization folds it to 况, so save the original before applying NFKC.

Unicode documented gaps in North Korean glyph coverage and reconstruction work in 2022. Depending on font coverage and design, 况 can look like 况, look subtly different, or be missing.

A technical, source-preserving form; in ordinary prose it can signal imported text or an input or conversion issue.

Use 况 or 況 in ordinary prose; keep 况 only when the source distinction matters.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 况 look like 况 in one font?

Unicode’s chart glyphs are references, not required designs. In 2022, Unicode also documented incomplete North Korean glyph coverage; one font may show a subtle difference while another may not render 况.
