What 練 means
Enter FAB0 through Unicode code-point input. Keep the result unnormalized if its source identity matters.
A font that supports this variation can show 練 UFE02. UFE02 is a variation selector, a character that requests a glyph form; this sequence survives normalization but is not the original UFAB0.
What does 練 mean?
It carries 練's familiar meanings, including practice and training.
Unicode included UFA70–UFAD9 for round-trip conversion with North Korea's KPS 10721-2000 repertoire, so the source distinction could survive conversion out and back. The standard reserves this range for compatibility use.
The base character is much older: the Eastern Han dictionary Shuowen Jiezi records silk processing—raw silk boiled until soft and white. It analyzes 糸 as the silk element and 柬 as a sound element. The idea of refinement extends to practicing a skill; Korean words of Chinese-character origin use 練 in 훈련 (訓練, training) and 연습 (練習, practice).
Why does 練 turn into 練?
Unicode normalization replaces 練 with its canonical equivalent, 練.
The text keeps the ordinary meaning but loses the KPS source code point. A font may draw 練 and 練 alike; once normalization leaves only 練, the text cannot reveal whether it began with 練.
Technical and archival; its presence points to a KPS source-preservation need, not conversational tone.
Is 練 safe for new text? No—use 練; keep 練 only when a KPS record needs its exact source code point.

1Why did 練 change to 練?
Normalization replaced it: Unicode treats them as canonically equivalent, so the output keeps 練 and loses the KPS source identity.
