What 遲 means
A compatibility form of 遲, meaning “slow,” “late,” or “delayed.”
The character 遲 has a long written history. Forms appear in Western Zhou bronze inscriptions (texts cast on bronze objects), Chu manuscripts, and later seal and clerical scripts, two historical styles of Chinese writing. The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, glosses it as “walking slowly”; later dictionary senses include lateness, hesitation, waiting, and “until.”
Unicode 17.0.0 retains 遲 for conversion to and from KPS 10721-2000, a Korean character encoding standard, so the distinction can survive conversion between the encodings.
For ordinary text, use the form standard in that language; reserve 遲 for preserving data that already contains it.

1Why does 遲 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
