What ⻚ means
Its older form depicted a person with a prominent head.
Early forms of 頁 on oracle bones—bones and turtle shells used for divination—and bronze objects show this human figure. The head connection survives in characters containing this component, such as 颜, associated with the face or appearance.
頁 later also served for a sheet or page, a use associated with 葉, “leaf.” The “leaf” in this symbol’s official name means a leaf of a book, not a picture of a plant. ⻚ represents the simplified form of radical 181 in the traditional Kangxi dictionary system.
A radical is the component under which a dictionary groups a character. This separately encoded radical symbol lets texts discuss that component on its own. Substituting ⻚ for 页 in a word can interfere with searching or text matching, even when they look the same.

2Questions people ask
1Why does ⻚ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Radicals Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
