What ⺰ means
It is a dedicated symbol for the simplified Chinese silk radical. A radical is the component dictionaries use to sort Chinese characters. ⺰ is for radical notation; the ordinary written form is separate.
The older silk sign 糸 appears in early Chinese script traditions; the Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, describes it as fine silk. Traditional Chinese uses 糹 on the left, while simplified Chinese uses 纟. In some characters, silk also suggests binding or connection.
Specialist notation for sorting or describing characters.

1Questions people ask
1Why does ⺰ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Radicals Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
