What ⺜ means
It is a headwear component, despite its sun-related name.
In the old Chinese character dictionary Shuowen Jiezi, 冃 is described as headwear associated with children and peoples beyond its cultural world. The older form is related to 帽, the Chinese character for a hat; ⺜ also appears as the top component in 冒.
One Chinese indexing tradition groups ⺜ with 日. A 2022 Unicode report records the disagreement, while its code-chart discussion identifies the component with 冃.
Specialist radical notation for dictionary indexing and character analysis, not an everyday word.
Can I use ⺜ for 日? No; use 日 for the ordinary character meaning sun or day.

1Questions people ask
1Why does ⺜ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Radicals Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
