cjk stroke hzw

CJK stroke HZW

14/39

A Unicode-aware picker or input method can enter ㇍, the HZW stroke. Its Chinese name 横折弯 (hengzhewan) describes a horizontal line that turns and bends within a Han character, a written form used across East Asian scripts; this CJK stroke can look different across fonts.

What ㇍ means

Use a Unicode-aware picker or system input method.

㇍ is a technical stroke character, so general emoji search is a poor route. Shortcuts vary by operating system and app; the fact rows identify the code point for input methods that accept hexadecimal entry.

What does ㇍ stand for?

It labels one compound stroke inside a Han character.

In Chinese stroke terminology, HZW is héng-zhé-wān (横折弯), literally “horizontal, turn, bend.” It describes a stroke that begins horizontally, changes direction, then curves. The label names part of a character's written structure, not the whole character's meaning or pronunciation.

The classification has a standards history. In 1965, a Chinese printed-character table set out the five main stroke families. In 2001, GF2001-2001 formalized names and ordering for turning strokes in GB 13000.1, the Chinese character encoding standard, for information processing, sorting, retrieval, and teaching; it records 横折弯. Separately, the Unicode encoding route for CJK strokes passed through Hong Kong's Supplementary Character Set (HKSCS) private-use mappings before standard Unicode assignments.

Why does ㇍ look different?

Fonts draw a representative stroke, not a pictogram.

Unicode provides representative glyphs for CJK strokes, and fonts or writing styles can draw their outlines differently. In the similar forms, HZ turns and stops, ㇍ HZW continues into a bend, HZWG adds a hook, and HZZ adds another turn.

These labels support stroke analysis and ideograph indexing—finding and sorting Han characters by their written forms. They do not give a whole character its pronunciation or meaning. On its own, ㇍ is technical notation for a stroke.

Technical and specialist: a label for stroke analysis, Han-character indexing, and text processing.

It names a stroke, not a full character or an independent message.
